Christian Ulmen
Christian Ulmen (born September 22, 1975 in Neuwied ) is a German presenter , entertainer , satirist as well as producer , actor , publicist , director , film editor and media entrepreneur .
Life
Christian Ulmen grew up in Hamburg . In his youth he already worked as a presenter for Radio Hamburg , Radio 107 and OK Radio . He also had his own monthly call-in program on TV on the Hamburg Open Channel . The show was called like his later one on MTV Unter Ulmen .
In 1995, Ulmen passed the Abitur at the Charlotte-Paulsen-Gymnasium in Hamburg . Because the subject Protestant theology had no numerus clausus (Ulmen had an Abitur grade of 3.6), he enrolled at the University of Hamburg for this subject, although he describes himself as “actually not a believer” despite membership in the youth group and confirmation . However, since he received an offer from MTV three weeks before the start of the semester, he never started studying. Instead, he continued to work on radio and television shows.
He was discovered in one such production in 1996 by a US talent scout who offered him a job at MTV Europe . At the age of 20 Ulmen moved to London and from then on worked for the then still Europe-wide broadcasting music television MTV and based on this moderated in English. He consciously spoke with a strong German accent, which was well received in England, but for which he was criticized in his home country. In 1998 MTV regionalized its program, Germany got its own MTV, and Ulmen now spoke German. After MTV HOT he moderated the personality show MTV Alarm from Hamburg, then live from Berlin . Due to differences with the new program management at MTV, Ulmen resigned in 1999.
He then wrote for various print media and moderated at Radio Fritz (then ORB, now RBB), which he still does now and then, as well as for the WDR program 1 Live . During this time he also produced a pilot show for Sat.1 with Harald Schmidt , but it was never broadcast.
In 2000, Ulmen returned to MTV as the producer of Unter Ulmen . In 2003 Leander Haußmann hired him as the leading actor for the movie Herr Lehmann . After a brief appearance in Quabeck's Waste Your Youth , this was his first major role as an actor. The press certified him a "startlingly mature debut" ( Die Welt ). A year later he received the Bavarian Film Prize for his portrayal of Mr. Lehmann.
Other major cinema productions followed, in which Ulmen always played leading roles. At MTV he gave a short guest appearance in Ulmens order . MTV achieved higher ratings with this show than with Unter Ulmen .
In 2005 he played in My New Friend for ProSieben; In 2007 he appeared there as Max Munzl in Dr. Psycho , for which he was honored with the Bavarian TV Prize and the Adolf Grimme Prize .
After his shows attracted attention less through high ratings and more through positive reviews in the features section and his programs had received widespread attention on the Internet, Ulmen decided to take new steps on the Internet. From the end of August 2008 to mid-June 2009, new clips based on individual characters from My New Friend were published weekly on ulmen.tv . The difference to Mein neue Freund is that the characters do not act in front of a hidden camera, but come into contact with people in a clearly recognizable TV context under the pretext of filming a reality soap.
For this purpose, Ulmen founded the company Ulmen Television GmbH in 2008 , which he has since operated as managing director in Berlin together with the author and producer Janna Nandzik . He produced various television programs (for example Uwe Wöllner meets ... for the rbb ), online formats (for example Der 12. Mann in cooperation with FC Bayern Munich ) and advertising. From October 2010 Ulmen appeared in the role of Uwe Wöllner with his own talk show on rbb and EinsFestival . A total of six episodes were planned by Uwe Wöllner wants to know .
The web TV provider ulmen.tv operated by Ulmen Television initially ran on the MySpass.de portal in cooperation with Brainpool . In autumn 2010 Ulmen switched to the 3min.de telecom portal with ulmen.tv . The series DIE SNOBS - You Can Also Without You , produced by Ulmen Television, was shown there from November 1, 2010.
While Ulmen Television had previously sold the clips it had produced for the Internet to the television station Comedy Central for secondary use , the sitcom DIE SNOBS - Sie kann auch ohne Dich was broadcast for the first time on November 11, 2010 on ZDFneo in an extended version as a six-part mini- series. In 2011 she received a nomination for the Adolf Grimme Prize in the entertainment category.
From December 2010 Ulmen was the producer of the program Stuckrad Late Night , later called Stuckrad-Barre , which was broadcast by Tele 5 until 2013 . In the show hosted by Benjamin von Stuckrad-Barre , Ulmen himself had small appearances in his role as Uwe Wöllner. The stated goal of the night show, broadcast in four seasons, was: "We want to create moments of surprise".
In 2009 Christian Ulmen also founded Ulmen Film GmbH, which specializes in the production of cinema films. Ulmen Television GmbH continues to take care of the production of television series, television shows, viral advertising and Internet TV. Ulmen's documentary film, in which he played the 18-year-old high school student Jonas for six weeks, who wants to graduate from high school, came in 2012 as Jonas - Imagine, it's school and you have to go back! in the cinemas.
In October 2012 it became known that Ulmen, together with Nora Tschirner as the investigator duo Lessing and Dorn, is filming an event crime scene in Weimar for the MDR . The episode entitled Die Fette Hoppe was broadcast in the 2013 Christmas program. Due to the positive feedback, other films with this line-up were produced; So far, a total of ten Tatort episodes have been filmed and broadcast (as of May 2020).
The online platform ulmen.tv also started in October 2012 . In addition to the well-known content from the time of MySpass.de, it also shows the program Stuckrad-Barre and the Snobs.
In 2013, the reality game show Who wants to fuck my girlfriend ?, supposedly conceived and moderated by his fictional character Uwe Wöllner, started . Two promised men bet on which one has the girlfriend who is more desirable by other men. In the first season, 12 episodes were produced.
Ulmen has been part of the comedy television series Jerks since 2017 . With. There he embodies himself as the fictional ex-husband of Collien Ulmen-Fernandes .
TV experiments
Even his MTV productions were characterized by a high degree of experimental enthusiasm and provocation. In an interview, Ulmen called this “overwhelming the everyday mind”. The Rolling Stone described his actions, mostly recorded by hidden cameras, as everyday poetry, the Süddeutsche Zeitung Ulmen itself as the avenger of the annoyed.
On January 10, 2005, ProSieben started his series My New Friend , which was widely discussed in the media and both praised and criticized with moral standards.
Because of the relatively low audience (1.2 million viewers in prime time), the station canceled the series after the first episode. The reviews of major newspapers from FAZ to Süddeutsche Zeitung to Welt am Sonntag were positive. After the series was discontinued, resistance formed on the Internet. On the fan page of the series, almost 7,000 visitors signed the guest book and requested a resumption of the program, which prompted ProSieben at the end of February 2005 to continue the series on Thursdays in the late program (11:15 pm). Despite the significantly better market shares, the ratings were still below the station average. My new friend was nominated for the German Television Prize 2005 because of Ulmen's “outstanding acting skills” (quote from the jury) .
Columns
Ulmen has already written media columns on consumer behavior for Die Zeit and Neon , as well as for the Tagesspiegel and the magazine of the Süddeutsche Zeitung . Until they were hired in 2009, he was also a columnist for the German edition of Vanity Fair .
Private
Ulmen lives in Potsdam. In 2010, after five years of marriage, Ulmen separated from his wife Huberta, with whom he had been in a relationship since 1999 and has a son. In 2011 he married Collien Fernandes , in April 2012 they gave birth to their daughter.
