action

As a cautious, clumsy understanding of women, advertising copywriter Daniel Hagenberger has little success with the opposite sex. On a vacation trip to Turkey, he meets the attractive Aylin Denizoglu, who, contrary to expectations, is interested in him. The rude awakening follows when Daniel meets Aylin's family for the first time back in Germany. Neither her parents nor her brother can he convince with his sensitive nature. When Aylin's handsome ex-boyfriend shows up, Daniel's self-doubts take over. He feels unmanly, helpless and scared that Aylin might leave him because of it. Especially since she put him off until later every time he tries to sleep with her, or even marry her. In his distress, Daniel turns to Aylin's brother Cem, who is supposed to teach him how to become a real macho. With a new outfit and self-confidence, Daniel throws himself into the nightlife with Cem and flirts with Aylin's cousins. His new appearance earns him respect from Aylin's family. Even his work colleagues do not know their Daniel again, who asserts himself against his boss for the first time. Aylin, however, watches Daniel's transformation with concern. After all, Aylin has had bad experiences with machos and loved Daniel as she had met him and not as he is now. She tells him on the head that her Daniel is no longer there and turns away from him. Daniel is stunned and wants to fight for his love, only his new way of life doesn't help him now. Trying to deal with the end like a macho only seems to bring success. So by chance he meets his old childhood sweetheart Gaby and he enjoys scoring points with her again through his self-confident demeanor. She had turned away from him then because he was too softy. Still, he painfully realizes how much he misses Aylin. He then sinks into self-pity, does not go out of the house after work, only drinks beer and hopes Aylin will call every minute. He's so absent-minded at work that he doesn't even seem to care about the presentation of his last ad campaign. His work colleagues can no longer see Daniel's condition. You sit down with him and, like advertising experts, can "give" him the right direction. Daniel realizes that he can only win Aylin back if he doesn't fight macho for her, but lovingly asks for forgiveness. But Aylin is no longer at home. Daniel is sure that he will find her where they met, in Turkey. He asks Cem to drive him to the airport immediately, but the road there is closed due to filming. A new episode of Alarm for Cobra 11 is currently being filmed and this is where you get right in the middle. Nevertheless, Daniel manages to catch the plane and fly to Turkey. Here he meets Aylin on the beach, where they first met. He takes off his macho costume in front of her and confesses his love to her, so that Aylin can't help but forgive and reconcile with him.

“What do we not do to find someone who loves us. We dress up, we pretend, but somewhere there is someone who loves us just as we are. "

criticism

Kino.de rated: “Ulmen has already varied the lovable and charming loser, who is still romantically successful, in hits like 'Maria, he doesn't taste it', where he has to prove himself to his Italian in-laws, or 'men's hearts'. The story, which is precisely tailored to this type of role, lets Daniel step on the wrong track in the tried and tested manner before he finally conquers the woman of his dreams Aylin (Aylin Tezel, commissioner in the Dortmund crime scene). "

Ursula Scheer wrote for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung : “'Macho Man' is not the most original German film of all time; Everything you see here has somehow been seen before, and towards the end the gag fireworks are more like a rain of crackers. But the comedy gathers a lot on the credit side. Christian Ulmen plays his cliché figure again and again as a touching character who actually mutates into such a macho halfway point that you can hardly recognize the actor. ”The critic also states:“ Only the uptight German parents are to blame for Daniel's misery Having problems with being German (Nazi era!) And masculinity (Alice Schwarzer as a poster girl). But the result of the tangled school education is exactly what Aylin wants. We Germans, says the film, only want one thing: that the others finally love us as we are. "

Rainer Gansera from the Süddeutsche Zeitung stated: “The joke of the novel - Moritz Netenjakob's bestseller of the same name - is all that remains. In the novel, emphasis is placed on the fact that Daniel is not naturally the upright booby, but was made to do so by his 68 parents. ”“ The most embarrassing thing: Daniel's macho metamorphosis under the expert guidance of Aylin's brother Cem (Dar Salim). Turkish for wimps. Daniel smeared pomade in his hair, tapped slogans, made a monkey. "
