Robert Zimmermann wonders about love is a German film by Leander Haußmann from 2008. It was based on the novel of the same name by Gernot Gricksch , who also wrote the screenplay.

action

The 26-year-old Robert Zimmermann works as a game designer in a hip but chaotic game forge in Hamburg, lives in a shared apartment and is in a relationship with his colleague Lorna. He thinks he has his life under control until one day a colleague at a snack bar accidentally splashes him with ketchup and he runs into Monika while cleaning the 20-year-old single employee. For him it is love at first sight and he is determined to win her heart. But that turns out to be difficult - not least because of the age and cultural differences as well as the resistance of Monika's young son.

Meanwhile, Robert’s family has gotten a little out of hand: his father is in a crisis and leaves his mother for a younger boy, while his lesbian sister is pregnant, much to the displeasure of her partner. To make matters worse, a film about Konrad Adenauer is being made in the family home . In addition, Robert's company is about to present a first-person shooter to an important Chinese customer, for whom Robert still has to make a major change.

After some back and forth, the family pulls itself together, and in the end Robert and Monika also find each other.

Reviews

For film-dienst , the film is a “trivializing film adaptation” of a “harmless book” that tries hard to function as a comedy, with a “notorious compulsion to narrate” almost all the punch lines and dragging the tempo. The viewer is "underestimated in their ability to understand more witty humor." The result is a construct of clichés and exaggerations, in which even the good leading actors hardly have a chance to develop.

Cinema describes Robert Zimmermann as astonished about love as a film that "in its confused hyperbole" is certainly not for everyone, but those who like it, "like it very much". The conclusion of this review is: "Romantic comedy between brightly colored burlesque and feel-good cinema."

According to Margret Köhler of Bavarian Television, this “chaotic group” is not necessarily dominated by “sensitive figure drawings” or “subtle jokes” - the “German humor worker” Haussmann prefers the “simple form of comedy” and “brutalism in laughter”. This doesn't necessarily have to be pleasing and boring at times, but sometimes the series of really amusing skits and crazy slapsticks make you smile.

Awards

In 2007 the film received the script award at the Nordic Film Days Lübeck . Author Gernot Gricksch received the Bavarian Film Prize for Best Screenplay in 2008. The film music by the Berlin band Element of Crime was nominated for the German Film Prize in 2009.
