criticism

“A remarkable film adaptation of the drama of the same name by Friedrich Schiller, which is well worth seeing; a story about love, freedom and death as a contemporary, fast-paced love story with some extremely splendid, late baroque debauchery. In addition to clear, powerful, all-intensifying moments, the staging also affords some unnecessary playfulness. The film suffers from quotes that don't always go well with its narrative. Overall, however, there has not been such a beautiful, so transformed film based on a play for a long time "

“The actually competent director Leander Haußmann (Sonnenalle) wanted to do a balancing act between Hollywood and classic stage theater, between trivial entertainment and literary aspirations - and he failed miserably. At the meta level, he was quite successful: in the drama as well as in the film adaptation, the clash of old and new leads to grief, suffering and death. Perhaps it is only this subtlety that could be applauded. "

- Lehrerfreund.de

“The classic drama by Friedrich Schiller as a cinematically staged love story with a top cast. With this film adaptation of “Kabale und Liebe”, Leander Haußmann proves that even a theater drama can have what it takes to be the best television entertainment. Together with Boris Naujoks, he turned the play into a fast-paced script without being unfaithful to Schiller. There are some streamlines and changes in the character management and dramaturgy, but the language is genuinely Schiller and still seems exciting today. It is much easier to understand than generations of students may have remembered. "
