Status Yo! is a film from 2004 about the Berlin underground hip-hop scene and the youth of the capital. “Status Yo!” Contains all four elements of hip-hop (“ MCing ”, “ DJing ”, “ Writing ” and “ B-Boying ”). The film is about problems in love, unemployment, racism and anti-racism, fights, money problems and a search for a father. Director Till Hastreiter had amateur actors play who are hip-hoppers in real life or who belong in some form to hip-hop culture, such as the rappers Yaneq and Sera Finale .

content

The film consists of several episodic stories that eventually come to an end.

Yan EQ promised to hold the biggest hip-hop party of the year to distract attention from a secret affair. But now he has to find bands and equipment without money. At the same time, the affair of the Croatian-born Saession with a Turkish woman is discovered by her brother, who kidnaps her to bring her back to Turkey. The rapper Sera loses his job and his apartment because of drugs, now he has to look for a new place to live. Graffiti sprayer Tarek is looking for a white train all by himself for his works.

Film music

The film has a very extensive soundtrack (due to the subject matter). In this case, the soundtrack on CD is called an "audio film" because it not only contains the music titles but also short text sequences (comparable to a radio play). The majority of the tracks were produced by producers and DJs B. Side and krutsch. The normal audio film CD comprises 32 titles with a running time of around 72 minutes.

reception

The Federal Agency for Civic Education writes of "gripping" episodes that tell a credible subculture portrait. Der Spiegel praises the “cineastic jam without pedagogue conceit” and the amateur actors who are close enough to the scene to be touching. The film takes the scene seriously and, on the other hand, does not use Berlin again as a backdrop for soaring dreams of the capital. Director Hastreiter proceeded “at the editing table with his takes like a DJ with his beats” and turned the film into an idiosyncratic big city symphony.

According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, it is precisely the many individual actions that are the flaw of the film, the coincidence of which seems partly constructed, the ticking off of all parts of hip-hop is static. Nevertheless, the film makes the popular hip-hopper proud” and offers a sometimes amusing but wonderful portrait of part of the youth.
