Dobromir

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dobromir was a Slavic prince of the 10th century, probably in Lusatia . He was the father of Emnilda , the third wife of the Polish king Bolesław I. Chrobry .

Dobromir was mentioned only once in the chronicle of Thietmar von Merseburg as " venerabilis senior Dobremirus " ( dear elder Dobremirus ).

Where Dobromir came from is unclear, possibly he was a son of the Heveller prince Tugumir . The palette of interpretations ranges from the " Milzener prince " (S. Zakrzewski), member of the Heveller dynasty (J. Widajewicz), member of a Saxon count family (AF Grabski) to the gentleman from the Cracow region (H. Lowmianski).

The solution to the riddle is subject to the following conditions:

  1. The name Emnilda and that of her daughter Regelindis lead with certainty to the conclusion that Dobromir was married to a Saxon count's daughter (from the Rikdags , Geros or the Querfurter family ?) Between 965 and 975 .
  2. The name Dobromir itself indicates connections to the Heveller dynasty (Tugumir, Drahomir ).
  3. Bolesław's marriage to Emnilda (987) must not be removed from the context of piastic alliance policy and the events of 1002 that led to the outbreak of Henry II's wars with Bolesław.
  4. The title senior indicates a middle position, Slavic princes were usually referred to as dux or princeps by Thietmar . On the other hand, the marriage to a Saxon noble family and to the Polish ruling house is of high importance.

Dobromir was probably a prince of Lusatia and the Milzenerland .
