Hermann I. (* around 980 , † 1. November 1038 ) was from 1009 Margrave of Meissen and from 1028 Graf in Hassegau . He was the eldest son of Margrave Ekkehard I and Suanehild, daughter of Duke Hermann Billung of Saxony . He was married to Reglindis , daughter of the Polish king Bolesław I. Chrobry from the Piast family .

Life

While the margraviate passed to his uncle Gunzelin after the murder of his father Ekkehard I on April 30, 1002 , the later margrave and his brother Ekkehard II were initially limited to their own property . As early as 1004, the patronage over Bautzen in Milzener Land had been in his hands.

In 1007 the war of King Henry II against Bolesław of Poland broke out again , who immediately invaded Lusatia , which he devastated and conquered the main fortress of Bautzen. After Hermann's feud against his uncle Gunzelin, who was also accused of pacting with Poland, he was deposed by a court of princes in 1009, and Hermann received the margraviate on the intervention of Queen Kunigunde , Archbishop Tagino of Magdeburg and on the advice of the princes. He did not take part in the campaign of his stepbrother Gero II in 1015, but accompanied his body to the Nienburg monastery with his brothers Ekkehard and Gunther . In 1018 he swore the peace of Bautzen with Poland and in 1030 helped Emperor Konrad II to regain all lost territories in the war against King Mieszko II Lambert of Poland. He stood in Thuringia against the Counts of Weimar-Orlamünde , plundered Weimar and fought for years with Bishop Thietmar von Merseburg about forest rights near Rochlitz and other questions.

Hermann's politico-military actions were predominantly characterized by the defense against the attacks by Poland against the Meissen and Lusatia brands, whose property he was able to secure in a series of fights. Several times in the wars against Poland he tried to mediate between the German king and his father-in-law. In the last years of his reign, which were more peaceful due to the peace treaty of 1031 between Konrad II and Mieszko II Lambert, the margrave was able to initiate the first steps towards expanding the country. In 1028 Hermann I had the Zeitz diocese relocated to the Ekkehardin Allod Naumburg and richly furnished it with property. His brother Ekkehard has been running the business since 1032.
