Alfried Wieczorek (born August 15, 1954 in Hildesheim ) is a German archaeologist and theologian. Wieczorek is expected to be General Director of the Reiss Engelhorn Museums in Mannheim until January 1, 2021 .

Life

He completed his studies in Frankfurt am Main , Munich and Mainz in the main subjects Prehistory and Protohistory and Protestant Theology in double studies as well as the minor subjects History, Art History and Classical Archeology in 1984 with a doctorate under Michael Müller-Wille . This was followed by activities as a research assistant at the Roman-Germanic Commission of the German Archaeological Institute in Frankfurt and at the Ecumenical Institute of Heidelberg University . At this university in 1986 he was appointed founding managing director of the “International Science Forum”.

After Wieczorek had worked for the Reiss-Museum Mannheim since 1990 as head of the archaeological preservation and the central department for exhibition and public relations as well as museum education, he was appointed deputy director and scientific director there in 1994. In 1999, Karin von Welck's successor was appointed Managing Director of the museums, which were renamed Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen on October 25, 2001. In his role as director of the museum, Wieczorek initiated numerous exhibitions in international cooperation with other museums, universities and other institutions .

Since 1993 Wieczorek has been an honorary executive member of the board of the German Associations for Antiquity Research , from 1993 to 2004 he was executive chairman of the school sponsoring association of the Evangelical Church in Baden and the foundation for the private Johann Sebastian Bach grammar school in Mannheim. From March 1999 to 2008 he was a board member of the Baden-Württemberg Museum Association and since June 2002 he has been chairman of the West and South German Association for Ancient Studies . In 1998, the Berlin University of Applied Sciences for Technology and Economics appointed him honorary professor for museum studies and restoration . In addition, Wieczorek was appointed Professor of the State of Baden-Württemberg in December 2013. Since 2002 he has been Chairman of the Curt Engelhorn Foundation for the Reiss Engelhorn Museums. In 2008 the Bassermann Cultural Foundation was founded, of which Wieczorek is the chairman of the board. In 2013, the establishment of the Blackberry Foundation for the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums doubled the foundation's capital. Wieczorek is also the chairman of the board of this foundation.

In 2008 he was to take up his position as President of the Lower Saxony State Office for Monument Preservation and in 2009 he was acted as the future General Director in Cologne. In both cases, however, he renounced and became general director of the newly structured museum landscape around the Reiss-Engelhorn museums. In 2011 Wieczorek was elected one of the four vice-presidents of the German Association for Archeology . Since July 5, 2017, he has been the president of this umbrella organization, succeeding Hermann Parzinger.

In the municipal elections in 2019 in Mannheim Wieczorek ran for the CDU . He was elected, but since he will be an employee of the city of Mannheim until 2020, he is not allowed to exercise the mandate. Wieczorek is the first successor if the obstacle does not apply.

Wieczorek has been married to the theologian Ulrike Link-Wieczorek since 1979 and has two daughters together.
