Karin Freifrau von Welck , b. Schmieding (born April 30, 1947 in Buir ) is a German ethnologist and was the Senator for Culture of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg from 2004 to 2010 ( non-party ). Since 2018 she has been dean of the United Cathedral Founders of Merseburg and Naumburg and the Zeitz Collegiate Foundation .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1966, Karin Freifrau von Welck studied political science , folklore , German , ancient American languages ​​and cultures , ethnology and linguistics at the universities of Hamburg and Cologne . In 1973, she completed her studies with a doctorate to become a Dr. phil. with the work investigations on the so-called conservatism of the Pueblo Indians in Arizona and New Mexico . Until 1974 she worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Ethnology at the University of Cologne and then took part in the construction of various smaller ethnographic museums. In 1979 she returned to the Institute for Ethnology in Cologne as a research assistant and in 1980 took over the management of the Indonesia department at the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum for Ethnology in Cologne, of which she was also deputy director from 1982.

1990 she became director of the Reiss-Museum of the city of Mannheim . In 1994 she was appointed honorary professor at the University of Mannheim . From 1998 to 2004 she was Secretary General of the Kulturstiftung der Länder .

Karin von Welck has been a member of the Presidium Board of the German Evangelical Church Congress since 2007 and was President of the 32nd German Evangelical Church Congress in Bremen in 2009 . In 2008 she was honored with the Max Herrmann Prize .

On March 17, 2004, she was appointed to the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, headed by Ole von Beust ( Senate von Beust II ). On May 7, 2008 the new Senate of the Hanseatic City of Hamburg was confirmed ( Senate von Beust III ) and the new authority for culture, sport and media was combined with the corresponding offices. Karin von Welck has since been Senator for Culture, Sports and Media. Furthermore, she was chairwoman of the supervisory boards of the Hamburg State Opera, the Deutsches Schauspielhaus and the Thalia Theater as well as various museums, such as B. the art gallery and the museum for arts and crafts in Hamburg.

On July 18, 2010, the First Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Ole von Beust, announced his resignation as well as the resignation of the Senator for Culture Karin von Welck and the State Councilor of the Senate Chancellery Volkmar Schön on August 25, 2010 at a press conference in the Hamburg City Hall . The announcement of the resignation was made independently of the referendum on school reform in Hamburg, which was taking place on the same day .

Since 2012 she has been the first canon in the history of the United Cathedral Founders of Merseburg and Naumburg and the Zeitz Collegiate Foundation. In addition, she is u. a. Board member of the German UNESCO Commission and member of the board of trustees of the German Literature Archive in Marbach.

In 2018 she was elected as the successor to the late Curt Becker as dean of the United Cathedral Founders of Merseburg and Naumburg and the Zeitz Collegiate Foundation . The previous deputy is the first woman to chair the cathedral chapter.
