Andreas Barner

Andreas Barner (born February 10, 1953 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German doctor and mathematician. From 2009 to 2016 he was Chairman of the Board of Management of Boehringer Ingelheim .

Education and career

Barner studied medicine at the University of Freiburg and mathematics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich , completing both courses with a doctorate .

After a year as an internship doctor , he switched to the pharmaceutical industry and initially held various functions in the research department of what was then Ciba-Geigy AG in Basel ( Switzerland ).

In 1992 Barner moved to Boehringer Ingelheim, Ingelheim am Rhein , (Germany), where he took over the management of the medical division with worldwide clinical research, registration, information and biometrics and drug safety. Since July 1, 1999, he was a member of the company's management, where he was responsible for the pharmaceutical research, development and medicine division. In 2009 he also took on the role of spokesman for the company management.

On June 30, 2016, Barner resigned as Chief Executive Officer and moved to the Boehringer Ingelheim Shareholders' Committee.

Other offices

Barner holds functions in several associations in science and industry. Since June 2013 he has been President of the Donors' Association for German Science . Barner is also a member of the Senate of the Max Planck Society and a member of the Presidium of the German Research Foundation .

Until 2007 he was also chairman of the board of the German Association of Research Drug Manufacturers. V. (VFA). In addition, he was a member of the executive committee of the Federal Association of German Industry . V. (BDI) as well as the Verband der Chemischen Industrie e. V. (VCI). In 2007 he was appointed to the Science Council by the German Federal President .

Barner has been a member of the Presidium of the German Evangelical Church Congress since 2008. He presided over the 35th German Evangelical Church Congress in Stuttgart in 2015 . In November 2015 he was elected as a member of the EKD Council.

From 2016 Barner was Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Managing Director of the Fazit Foundation , which controls the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as the majority owner . In July 2019 he changed roles in the Fazit Foundation and the Supervisory Board with Karl Dietrich Seikel . He is now chairman of the supervisory board of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

Private

Barner is married and has one daughter.

Awards

In 2002 he received the Great Silver Medal of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria . In 2008, Barner was honored with the professional title of Professor for his special services to Austria as a research location, conferred by the Austrian Federal President . In 2011 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. For 2016, Barner was awarded the Leibniz Medal of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences. In August 2020 he received the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class.
