Eckhard Nagel (born July 29, 1960 in Hanover ) is a German physician and professor of medical management and health sciences at the University of Bayreuth .

Life

Eckhard Nagel initially studied medicine at the Hanover Medical School and at the University of Vermont (USA), at the Dumfries Royal Infirmary Hospital in Scotland, at the University of Joseph Fourier in Grenoble (France) and at the Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover , New Hampshire (UNITED STATES).

After graduating in 1986, he received his doctorate in medicine in 1987. At the Medical University of Hanover, he initially worked as a scientific assistant and later as a senior physician at the associated clinic for abdominal and transplant surgery . He also studied philosophy and history at the University of Hanover and received his doctorate in philosophy in 1995. Eckhard Nagel has held the chair for medical management and health sciences at the University of Bayreuth since 1999 . Since 2001 he has been Managing Director of the Institute for Medical Management and Health Sciences at the University of Bayreuth (IMG).

In addition to his duties at the University of Bayreuth, he held medical management positions. From 2001 to 2010 he was chief physician in the field of general, visceral and transplant surgery at the Augsburg Clinic (today Augsburg University Clinic ) and headed the affiliated transplant center. From 2010 to 2015 he held the office of medical director and chairman of the board of the Essen University Hospital . During this time he was on leave from the University of Bayreuth. In terms of medicine, he continues to work as primary surgeon at the Ederhof Special Hospital in the field of “rehabilitation for children and adolescents after organ transplantation” in Iselsberg-Stronach , Austria .

He is married to a doctor and has three children.

Memberships

From 1998 to 2006 Eckhard Nagel was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Hanns Lilje Foundation , and from 2000 to 2006 its chairman. In 2001 Eckhard Nagel was appointed to the National Ethics Council of Germany and was its deputy chairman. In 2005 he was appointed a second time. After the dissolution of the National Ethics Council and a new establishment based on the Ethics Council Act , Eckhard Nagel was a member of the German Ethics Council from February 2008 to 2016. From November 21, 2002 to August 28, 2003, Eckhard Nagel was also a member of the Rürup Commission .

Eckhard Nagel has been Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Rudolf Pichlmayr Foundation since 2000. In 2006 he succeeded Wolfgang Frühwald as chairman of the jury of the Augsburg Science Prize for Intercultural Studies , of which he has been a member since 2002. In addition, he is a member of the Standing Commission for Organ Transplantation at the German Medical Association. Appointed by the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia, Eckhard Nagel was also a member of the supervisory board of the University Hospital Essen from 2002 to 2010.

From 2001 to 2013 Eckhard Nagel was a member of the executive committee of the German Evangelical Church Congress . In this capacity he was President of the 30th German Evangelical Church Congress 2005 in Hanover. He was also the Protestant President of the 2nd Ecumenical Church Congress 2010 in Munich. As part of his commitment to the Kirchentag movement, the practicing Christian also deals with current socio-political issues in several dialogue Bible studies together with Frank-Walter Steinmeier and in main panels with guests such as the Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai, and shows the connection between biblical texts and the topics and challenges our time.

Since 2001, Eckhard Nagel has also established an annual Christmas lecture at the University of Bayreuth to bring together students and professors as well as the interested public at the end of a busy year and look back. In recent years, outstanding personalities such as Joachim Gauck, Gerhard Schröder, Jean Asselborn and Sigmar Gabriel have been won over for this event.

From 2007 to 2015, Eckhard Nagel was the spokesman for Research Group 655 of the German Research Foundation and a member of the Board of Trustees of the German Study Prize of the Körber Foundation, of which he became Chairman in 2015.

Since 2011 he has been Vice President of the German-Chinese Society for Medicine (DVGM) eV and has been coordinating the German-Chinese government consultations in the field of health for the federal government since 2013. Since 2015 he has been a member of the Supervisory Board of the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the University Council of the University of Coburg. Eckhard Nagel has been President of the Board of Trustees of the Stella Maris Foundation since January 2017 .

He was elected by the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia on December 14, 2016 as a full member of the 16th Federal Assembly.
