Heinz Friedrich Bernhard Zahrnt (born May 31, 1915 in Kiel ; † November 1, 2003 in Soest ) was a German Protestant theologian , writer and publicist .

Career

Zahrnt came as the son of Julius Zahrnt, the manager of a bank branch, and his wife Margarete, b. Neumann, to the world. After graduating from a high school in Kiel, he studied Protestant theology, philosophy and history at the universities of Kiel , Marburg and Tübingen from 1933 to 1938 . In 1938 and 1939 he passed his theological exams and then worked briefly as an assistant at the University of Vienna . Between 1941 and 1945 he served as a soldier in World War II. After the end of the war, he initially took over a pastor's position in Rosenheim , but returned to his home town of Kiel in 1946, where he was a student pastor until 1951was active. During this time Zahrnt did his doctorate at the University of Heidelberg on Luther's interpretation of history as a Dr. theol. From 1950 onwards he wrote for 25 years for the Deutsche Allgemeine Sonntagsblatt in Hamburg and, as theological editor-in-chief, made a lasting contribution to establishing the paper as a political, cultural and religious forum.

From 1960 to 1999 Zahrnt was a member of the Presidium of the German Evangelical Church Congress , including from 1971 to 1973 as its President. With his theological work, Zahrnt succeeded in making the results of modern theology and their analysis of criticism of religion understandable to a broad audience . About his Jesus book Jesus from Nazareth. Ein Leben (1987) judged Klaus Wegenast : "I have to admit: The book by Heinz Zahrnt cast a spell over me, although I heard my 'historical conscience' call out again and again in many places."

He was a member of the PEN Center Germany . Margot Käßmann gave the speech at his funeral . His oldest son is the ancient historian Michael Zahrnt .
