The Association of Researcher Pharmaceutical Manufacturers eV (VFA) (stylized as vfa ) represents the interests of 45 pharmaceutical companies in Germany (as of October 2019).

Association structure

The members of the VFA represent more than two thirds of the entire German pharmaceutical market and employ more than 80,000 people in Germany, more than 17,000 of them in research and development of pharmaceuticals. The seat of the association is Berlin-Mitte . The association's chairman of the board had been Han Steutel (then Bristol-Myers Squibb ) since June 2, 2016 . He has been President of the vfa since October 1, 2019. Until May 2019, Birgit Fischer was the association's general manager from May 1, 2011 . She succeeded Cornelia Yzer , who was General Manager from 1997 to 2011.

The VFA mainly represents the interests of global players and their subsidiaries, but also of smaller biotech startups. The second largest pharmaceutical association, the Federal Association of the Pharmaceutical Industry (BPI), sees itself more as a lobbyist for medium-sized pharmaceutical manufacturers.

VFA Bio

The VFA Bio department represents biotechnology interests in the VFA. 29 companies belong to it (as of October 2019). The CEO of VFA Bio is Frank Mathias (Rentschler Biotechnologie GmbH).

Association work

Lobbying and public relations work on questions of pharmacoeconomics , pharmacoepidemiology and drug safety from the point of view of the association companies represent interests .

The association is the client of the advertising campaign “Research is the best medicine”. For this and another campaign, he was awarded the Political Award for Political Communication in 2005 and 2007 .

From 2005, the VFA organized the photo competition “Images of Research” together with the news magazine Focus .
