ER Squibb was founded in 1858 by Edward Robinson Squibb (1819–1900) in Brooklyn . The company was known for high quality standards and at times they also published an alternative to the US Pharmacopeia (Squibb's Ephemeris of Materia Medica). During the Civil War they were a major supplier of pharmaceuticals to the Northern Army. In 1938 Squibb opened the Squibb Institute for Medical Research in New Brunswick (New Jersey) as a research laboratory. This received the Lasker ~ DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award in 1955 . In 1944 they opened the largest penicillin factory in the USA in New Brunswick.

Bristol-Myers was formed in 1898 from the Clinton Pharmaceutical Company, which was taken over in 1887 by William McLaren Bristol (1860-1935) and John Ripley Myers (1864-1899) in Clinton (New Jersey) . At first they had success with a laxative (Sal Hepatica, modeled on the mineral waters of Bohemia) and a toothpaste. From 1943 they began to produce penicillin for the US Army (in East Syracuse, where the Bristol Laboratories originated) and continued their commitment to antibiotics after the Second World War. They were in competition with Squibb. In 1989 the two companies merged.

Bristol-Myers Squibb received the National Medal of Technology in 1999 .

In January 2019 it was announced that a merger of Celgene by Bristol-Myers Squibb for US $ 74 billion had been approved by the boards of both companies. Due to requirements, the psoriasis product Otezla ( Apremilast ) had to be sold to Amgen . The merger took place in the 4th quarter of 2019.

The Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation awards the Bristol Myers Squibb Award in a number of areas .

Products

BMS production facilities manufacture medicines and health products for various therapeutic areas. Until recently, BMS also owned its subsidiary Mead Johnson , which makes nutritional products such as Enfamil baby formulas and vitamin supplements for children such as Tri-Vi-Sol . The companies Medical Imaging (until 2007) and ConvaTec Stoma and Wound Care (until 2008) also belonged to BMS. BMS also holds shares in ImClone, a biotech company. Originally, BMS wanted to take over the ImClone company completely. In August 2008, BMS was confronted in Germany with the market launch of clopidogrel besilate from the generic manufacturers Ratiopharm and Hexal , which competed with Iscover as a drug with the world's second largest turnover thanks to its significantly lower prices.

BMS sells the following patented drugs, among others :

criticism

In early January 2019, US Federal Judge Theodore Chuang ruled that Bristol-Myers Squibb, Johns Hopkins University and the Rockefeller Foundation were jointly responsible for allegations of human experimentation with syphilis in Guatemala in the 1940s and 1950s. Hundreds of soldiers, mentally ill, prostitutes and convicted criminals would have been infected with syphilis in order to test the effectiveness of penicillin against it. In 2010, President Obama apologized to the victims. In 2015, 774 victims and victim relatives filed a lawsuit. They affirm that the experiments were carried out without the knowledge or consent of those affected. According to Chuang, the plaintiffs are demanding a total of one billion dollars in compensation.
