Implant files

In November 2018, the Süddeutsche reported in the course of the international research mentioned in the Implant Files about defective implants: "For years Medtronic has had a reputation for being involved in conflicts of interest, tax tricks and corruption."

ICD electrodes

In late 2007, it became known that the Sprint Fidelis series electrodes could break and have been linked to five deaths in the United States. Medtronic paid $ 268 million to 3,700 plaintiffs in 2010.

IT security gaps

In early 2017, hackers Billy Rios and Jonathan Butts informed the company about a vulnerability in its insulin pumps. Rios and Butts programmed a. a. an Android app with which the insulin dosage of several pumps from different series could be indirectly manipulated wirelessly. Medtronic only responded to this information with a recall in mid-2019. In addition, in August 2018, serious security vulnerabilities in the software of the Adapta pacemaker became known. With little effort, they can be induced to execute manipulated firmware or to stop operation entirely. Medtronic had also been informed of this by Rios and Butts 18 months earlier, but was unwilling to take remedial action, which is why Rios published the bug . In October 2018, Medtronic received the Austrian negative Big Brother Award in the business and finance category . The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) warned in an article at the beginning of 2019 about two similar security gaps in many of the manufacturer's defibrillator implants. As of January 2020, these gaps have now been closed for some models, but remain open for others.
