tasks

In the event of a tie, the President of the National Council has the casting vote, but otherwise does not vote. He heads the office of the National Council , which sets the Council's agenda. He can cancel or interrupt council meetings.
The President of the National Council is often referred to as the highest Swiss , but only occupies fourth place in the official protocol-based ranking established by the Federal Council . As President of the Council, he is on an equal footing with the President of the Council of States , but in his capacity as President of the United Federal Assembly he heads the highest Swiss electoral authority.
choice
At the beginning of a new legislative period and until a new president is elected, the senior president (the oldest member) holds office. The term of office of the President is one year. The President and Vice-Presidents are elected by the National Council at the beginning of each winter session. It is common for the second vice president to be elected first vice president the next year and president the following year.
With regard to the parliamentary group membership of the President of the National Council, a certain rotation has become established. The four Federal Council parties alternate between the presidents in the order SVP, CVP, SP, FDP - which used to correspond roughly to the ascending order of strength of the parties. Previously, it had been customary to consider a small parliamentary group every twelve years instead of the SVP, which was not that strong at the time, the last time in 1995 with a member of the Liberal Party. In 2012, Maya Graf was the first representative of the Greens to be elected President of the National Council.
