In the 1840s, the first settlers of European descent reached the area around what is now Fridley and built a trading post on nearby Rice Creek . John Banfill, who settled there in 1847, called the area Manomin . In 1855 Abram McCormick Fridley was appointed Manomin's first citizen representative. The village initially belonging to Ramsey County became an independent county on May 23, 1857. With 18 sections, it was the smallest county in the United States. Almost thirteen years later in 1870 Manomin was incorporated as a township into Anoka County. In 1879 the name was changed to Fridley .
On June 18, 1949, Fridley was organized as a Village and received city rights in 1957. Like many suburbs of the Twin Cities, Fridley experienced rapid population growth after the Second World War, which did not weaken again until the 1960s. Since then, priority has been given to urban development and quality of life projects. In 1970 the establishment of a Springbrook Nature Center began. This covers a 51 hectare nature park and was opened in 1974 after a citizen vote. In 1986 parts of the park were destroyed by a tornado.
