Lino Lakes is located in the northern suburbs of the cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul in southeast Anoka County amid a chain of lakes that are connected by Rice Creek . The first white settlers came to the area around today's city in the middle of the 19th century. As the first administrative unit, the Township of Centerville was founded in 1857 , which included the area of ​​the present-day cities of Centerville and Lino Lakes and had the usual size with 36 square miles.

In the 1950s, the neighboring municipalities tried to acquire land from Centerville Township. To prevent this, the residents of the township decided to plant a community themselves. In 1955, two communities (" Villages ") were created: Lino Lakes (named after the post office of the same name that had existed for years) and Centerville, which developed from the rest of the township and was completely surrounded by the urban area of ​​Lino Lakes.

In 1972 the Minnesota Parliament decided to introduce city status as the only form of local self-government for all municipalities.
