The county is located southeast of the geographic center of Minnesota in the northern suburbs of the cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul . It is bounded to the southwest by the Mississippi and is about 35 km to the east from Wisconsin . It has an area of 1156 square kilometers, of which 59 square kilometers are water. history
Anoka County was formed on May 23, 1857 from parts of Ramsey County. Like the district capital, it was named after a word from the Dakota language, which translates as meaning on both sides .
