geography
The county is located in central southwest Minnesota on the northeast bank of the Minnesota River , a right tributary of the Mississippi . It has an area of 2557 square kilometers, of which eleven square kilometers are water. The following neighboring counties border Renville County:

history
Renville County was formed on February 20, 1855 from parts of Nicollet County, Sibley County and Pierce County, which now only exists in Wisconsin. It was named after Joseph Renville (1779–1846), one of the first white settlers in the area.
