geography
The county is located almost in the extreme southeast of Minnesota and borders in the northeast with Wisconsin , whose border is formed by the Mississippi . It has an area of 1662 square kilometers, of which 40 square kilometers are water. The northwest of the county is traversed by the Whitewater River , a right tributary of the Mississippi. Winona County was formed on April 4, 1854 from parts of Fillmore County and Wabasha County. It was named after the Indian expression for first-born daughter or after the cousin of the last three chiefs of the Dakota called Winona.

Demographic data
According to the 2010 census , Winona County had 51,461 people in 19,292 households. The population density was 31.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 2.45 people each in the 19,292 households.
The racial the population was composed of 94.8 percent white, 1.3 percent African American, 0.4 percent Native American, 2.4 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.1 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.6 percent of the population regardless of ethnicity.
18.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 67.5 percent were between 18 and 64 and 13.7 percent were 65 years or older. 50.8 percent of the population was female.
The median income for a household was 44,848 USD . The per capita income was $ 22,327. 16.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
