history

The area around La Crescent has been inhabited for thousands of years. Before the arrival of the white settlers, the Dakota and Winnebago resided here.

After the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, Nathan Boone, Daniel Boone's youngest son , was among the surveyors who explored the area. The Indians living here were expelled in the 1840s to give more space for white settlement.

La Crescent was founded in 1851 by Peter Cameron and was originally named Camerons . Cameron tried to dig a canal to re-route the Mississippi River so that it bypassed La Crosse across the river in Wisconsin and was closer to the place he founded. However, he died in 1857 about ten weeks before the planned completion of the canal, which was then no longer completed. The remains of the canal are still visible in aerial photographs today.

After Cameron's death, the place was renamed "Manton" by William and Harvey Gillet, who cleared the current settlement center. Shortly thereafter, the somewhat unscrupulous Kentucky Land Company changed the name to La Crescent. They wanted to better attract a more romantic-sounding name of the city to the settlers and came to the name, because the river around the city (in English a bow in the form of a crescent moon crescent ) makes. La Crescent was incorporated in 1857.

John S. Harris had arrived in La Crescent in 1856 and gave the city its face as the center of apple cultivation. Despite the assumption by almost everyone that apples cannot thrive in Minnesota, Harris planted his first apple trees in 1857 and made trials until he found trees tough enough to withstand the harsh winters of the Midwest . He planted thousands of apple trees and tried hundreds of varieties, half of which were total losses. Harris was a founding member of the Minnesota State Horticultural Society. Since 1947 the city has celebrated its legacy every year with an apple festival. In 2002 the city registered the title “Apple Capital of Minnesota” (German: Apple Capital of Minnesota) as a trademark.

The acreage has remained almost unchanged since the 1940s, although the number of apple growers has now fallen to a quarter of what it was then. Eighty percent of production is sold in Minnesota, with the remainder going to surrounding states and Canada.
