history

In 1851 Orrin Smith founded the town of Montezuma. In 1953 the settlement was renamed Winona. We-No-Nah means the daughter born first in the language of the Dakota living there .

In 1855 there were already 815 residents and 2,464 in 1860. In the 1880s, Winona was the third largest city in Minnesota. Winona owes its rapid development to the railway . In 1872 the first railway bridge was built over the Mississippi River , followed in 1891 by the second, the Winona Rail Bridge . Both bridges were abandoned in the 1970s and 1980s and later wholly or partially demolished.

The inland port was built in the 1860s and became the fourth largest inland port in the United States in 1870.

Education and culture

Winona is home to Winona State University , a university founded in 1858 . Graduates include House Representatives John Blatnik and Tim Penny . The Minnesota Marine Art Museum exhibits mostly marine painting from the 19th and 20th centuries. The city hosts the Great River Shakespeare Festival annually on the banks of the Mississippi River .
