Timothy Joseph "Tim" Penny (born November 19, 1951 in Albert Lea , Minnesota ) is an American politician . Between 1983 and 1995 he represented the state of Minnesota in the US House of Representatives .

Life

Tim Penny attended Kiester High School until 1969 . He then studied at Winona State University until 1974 . Penny graduated from the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis in 1975 with a degree . Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party , which since a merger with the Farmer-Labor Party in Minnesota in 1944 is called the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL).

Penny was a member of the Minnesota Senate from 1976 to 1982 . In the 1982 congressional elections, he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Minnesota . There he took over from Arlen Erdahl from the Republican Party on January 3, 1983 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six consecutive terms in Congress by January 3, 1995 . During this time, the 27th amendment to the constitution was passed there.

In 1994, Tim Penny declined to run again. He later moved to the Independence Party of Minnesota . In 2002 he ran unsuccessfully for this party in the gubernatorial elections in Minnesota. In the 2008 presidential election , Penny supported Republican candidate John McCain . Today he is President of the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation . He also works in various functions at several universities. Penny lives in Waseca privately . He has four children.
