Albert Lea is a city in the south of the US state Minnesota with around 18,400 inhabitants. It is the administrative seat of Freeborn County and is located at the intersection of Interstate 90 and Interstate 35 .

Albert Lea is around 150 kilometers south of the Twin Cities on Fountain Lake and Albert Lea Lake . According to the United States Census Bureau , the area of ​​the city is 32.5 square kilometers, of which 4.6 square kilometers are water.

history

The city is named after Albert Miller Lea , an American Forces surveyor who explored southern Minnesota and northern Iowa in 1835 , including the area where Albert Lea is now located.

Albert Lea came in 1959 in the United States across the country into the headlines after the local group of the United Packinghouse Workers of America against Wilson & Co. in the strike occurred. Wilson & Co. was one of the four largest meat processors at the time. When the company tried to keep operations going with strikebreakers, violent clashes broke out that divided the city. During the 109-day labor dispute, the governor of the state of Orville Freeman closed the facility. He stationed the Minnesota National Guard and declared martial law. Despite criticism in the press, a federal district court in Minneapolis upheld the governor's decision, but returned responsibility for operations to Wilson & Co. a few days later.

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Albert Lea lived in 18,356 people. The population density was 657.4 people per km ². There were 8133 housing units at an average of 291.3 per km ². Albert Lea's population was 92.80% White , 0.37% Black or African American , 0.29% Native American , 0.80% Asian , 0.03% Pacific Islander , 4.54% said others Belonging to races and 3.18% named two or more races. 9.48% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.
