Mary Kelly (born June 7, 1941 in Fort Dodge , IA ) is an American conceptual artist whose work primarily deals with feminist topics.

Life

Kelly studied art and music at the College of Saint Teresa , a Catholic women's college in Winona , MN , where she graduated with a BA in 1963 . Then she went to Europe, and studied art and art history at the Institute Pius XII. in Florence , where she in 1965 the MA received. In 1970 , after further studies, she received a postgraduate degree in painting from St. Martin's School of Art in London .

From 1968 Kelly worked in London as an artist, teacher, curator and publicist. Her first solo exhibition took place in 1976 at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London - Kelly showed three of the six documents from her multi-year project Post-Partum Document . The work visualizes and analyzes the mother-child relationship between Kelly and her son, using drawings, diagrams and found objects . At that time, the work also gained a certain level of awareness outside of the art world, which resulted from the publicity surrounding the use of materials that were not considered worthy of art, such as B. used diapers resulted. Post-Partum Document was first published in book form in 1983, and was first fully exhibited at the Yale Center for British Art in 1984 . In 1989 Kelly moved from London to New York. She is currently a professor in the Department of Art at UCLA .

Kelly deals mainly with topics such as cultural identity, especially the construction of femininity and power in the western world. She takes a critical look at the works of u. a. Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan apart.
