Mary Pat Kelly

Mary Pat Kelly ( Mary Patricia Kelly ; * 1944 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American writer and director.

life and career

Mary Pat Kelly was born in Chicago and spent her childhood and youth in the city. Their ancestors come from Ireland and immigrated to America in the 19th century during the Great Famine , where they settled in Chicago. Kelly processed genealogical research into her Irish ancestors in her novels Galway Bay and its successor Of Irish Blood .
Kelly was at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College , at the City University of New York ( Ph.D. in English literature), and at the Film School NYU trained. After graduating, she worked in Hollywood as a screenwriter for Paramount and Columbia Pictures , as well as in New York as a producer and director for Good Morning America and Saturday Night Live .
Prior to her three novels, Kelly wrote exclusively as a book author. One of them ( Proudly We Served: The Men of the USS Mason - a report on the African-American crew of a US warship in World War II ) was made into a film under the title Proud in 2004. Kelly wrote the script for it herself and also directed it.

Mary Pat Kelly currently lives in New York City with her husband, Irish-born web designer Martin Sheerin .
