Thomas Earl "Tom" Emmer Jr. (born March 3, 1961 in South Bend , Indiana ) is an American politician . Since January 2015, he has represented the state of Minnesota in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Tom Emmer was born in Indiana but grew up in Minnesota. He attended St. Thomas Academy in Mendota Heights and then Boston College . This was followed by studies at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks until 1984 . After a subsequent law degree at William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul and his admission to the bar in 1988, he began to work in this profession. In the meantime he also worked as a radio host. Politically, he joined the Republican Party .

Between 1995 and 2002 he was a member of the Independence Town Council in Hennepin County . In 2003 and 2004 he was a member of the Delano City Council in Wright County . From 2004 to 2010 he was a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives , where he headed the Republican parliamentary group in 2007 and 2008. In 2004 he ran for governor of Minnesota, but was defeated by Democrat Mark Dayton .

In the 2014 congressional elections , Emmer was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of his state , where he succeeded Michele Bachmann , who was no longer running, on January 3, 2015 . He defeated the Democrat Joe Perske with 56:38 percent of the vote. Re-elected in 2016 and 2018, he will also serve in the 116th United States Congress, which will meet on January 3, 2019 . His new legislative term runs until January 3, 2021 with the option of a further candidacy in 2020.

Emmer has been chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee since 2019 .
