Francis Shoemaker
Francis Henry Shoemaker (born April 25, 1889 in Flora Township , Renville County , Minnesota , † July 24, 1958 in Minneapolis , Minnesota) was an American politician . Between 1933 and 1935 he represented the state of Minnesota in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Francis Shoemaker was born on a farm in Flora Township. He acquired his school knowledge himself with the help of his mother. Later he worked in agriculture. Even then he was committed to the interests of farmers. He became a member of several organizations that represented the interests of farmers and workers. Shoemaker was instrumental in founding the Minnesota Farmer-Labor Party . In 1924 he also took part in the founding of the federal party in Chicago . There he was even proposed as his party's vice presidential candidate. But Shoemaker declined this offer. In 1921 to 1927 he was in Green Bay ( Wisconsin out the "People's Voice" newspaper). In 1928 he published the newspaper "Organized Farmer" in Red Wing .
In the 1932 congressional elections Shoemaker was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Minnesota , where he succeeded Conrad Selvig on March 4, 1933 . Since he refused to run again in 1934, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until January 3, 1935 . During this time, the federal government's first New Deal laws were passed. In addition, the 21st Amendment to the Constitution was passed, which repealed the 18th Amendment from 1919. It was about the prohibition law .
In 1934, Shoemaker unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for the US Senate elections . He then reapplied for Congress as an independent. However, this candidacy was unsuccessful. In 1942 another attempt to return to Congress failed. Otherwise, Shoemaker went back to farming. He died in Minneapolis in July 1958 and was buried in Flora, his birthplace.
