William Gallagher, 1949

William James Gallagher (born May 13, 1875 in Minneapolis , Minnesota , †  August 13, 1946 in Rochester , Minnesota) was an American politician . Between 1945 and 1946 he represented the state of Minnesota in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Gallagher attended public schools in his home country including North High School . Between 1895 and 1896 he was employed by a newspaper. As a proofreader, he checked their articles for errors. In 1897, Gallagher moved to Spokane , Washington state . There he took on the same task at a workers' newspaper. After his return to Minneapolis he worked as a driver and clerk for a freight company until 1919. From 1919 to 1927 he was a road sweeper at the Hennepin County Roads Departmentactive. He carried out the same activity from 1927 until his retirement in 1942 for the city of Minneapolis. He only became politically active after his retirement.

Gallagher became a member of the Democratic Party , which since 1944 after the merger with the Farmer-Labor Party in Minnesota calls the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party . In the 1944 congressional election, he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Minnesota . There he took over from Richard Pillsbury Gale of the Republican Party on January 3, 1945 . He was nominated again for the 1946 elections. However, he did not live to see the election date. He died in Rochester on August 13, 1946. During his short time in Congress , World War II ended . William Gallagher was buried in his native Minneapolis.
