James Bede (1914)

James Adam Bede (born January 13, 1856 in North Eaton Township , Lorain County , Ohio , †  April 11, 1942 in Duluth , Minnesota ) was an American politician . Between 1903 and 1909 he represented the state of Minnesota in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Bede attended public schools in his home country and then studied at Oberlin College in Ohio and Tabor College in Iowa . He then completed an apprenticeship in printing and studied law. But Bede did not work as a lawyer. After finishing his printer apprenticeship, he worked as a teacher in Ohio and Arkansas . Eventually he became a journalist. He published various newspapers and magazines. Between 1888 and 1891 he was a correspondent for some western newspapers in the federal capital Washington . He then settled in Pine City, Minnesota, where he also worked in the newspaper business. In 1894 he was US Marshal for Minnesota during a railroad strike .

Politically, Bede was a member of the Republican Party . In the congressional elections of 1902 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington as a candidate for his party in the then newly created eighth constituency of Minnesota. There he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1903. After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1909 . In 1908 he was no longer nominated by his party for another term.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Bede returned to Pine City, where he resumed his previous activities in the newspaper business. In 1927 he moved to Duluth, where he also worked in this industry. He also participated in the expansion of the St. Lawrence Seaway . James Bede died in Duluth on April 11, 1942 and was buried in Pine City.
