William H. Harries

William Henry Harries (born January 15, 1843 in Dayton , Ohio , †  July 23, 1921 in Seattle , Washington ) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1893 he represented the state of Minnesota in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Harries joined the Union Army at the beginning of the Civil War . He remained in military service until April 1866. He rose to the rank of captain. After a subsequent law degree at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and his admission to the bar in 1868, he began to work in his new profession in Hokah (Minnesota). He later moved his residence and office to Caledonia .

Between 1874 and 1878, Harries was a district attorney in Houston County . Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1890 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Minnesota , where he succeeded Mark H. Dunnell on March 4, 1891 . But since he was defeated by Republican James Albertus Tawney in the following elections in 1892 , he was only able to complete one term in Congress until March 3, 1893 .

After serving in the US House of Representatives, Harries was named by President Grover Cleveland to head the Minnesota federal tax department. He held this office between 1894 and 1898. He served in Saint Paul . He then returned to Caledonia, where he again worked as a lawyer. In 1901 he became the Minnesota state chairman of the Grand Army of the Republic Civil War Veterans Association . In 1903 Harries became a member of the Board of Trustees of the Minnesota Veterans Homes. Later he was employed as a secretary in their administration from 1907 to 1911. Eventually he became their leader. Harries held this position between 1911 and 1918. He died in Seattle on July 23, 1921 and was buried in Caledonia.
