Jacob H. Stewart

Jacob Henry Stewart (born January 15, 1829 in Clermont , Columbia County , New York , †  August 25, 1884 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ) was an American politician . Between 1877 and 1879 he represented the state of Minnesota in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jacob Stewart moved with his parents to Peekskill , Westchester County, in his early teens . There he attended public schools. He then studied at Phillips Academy and then Yale College . After a subsequent medical degree in New York City and his license as a doctor in 1851, he began to work in Peekskill in his new profession.

In 1858 Stewart moved to Saint Paul, Minnesota. There he became head of medical care ( Medical Officer ) in Ramsey County in 1856 . At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He served in the Minnesota Senate in 1858 and 1859 . Between 1857 and 1863 he served as Surgeon General Secretary of Health of Minnesota. During the civil war he was a member of the Union army as a medic .

Jacob Stewart was Mayor of Saint Paul in 1864 and 1868, and from 1872 to 1874. From 1865 to 1870 he also worked there as a postman. In the congressional elections of 1876 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Minnesota , where he succeeded William S. King on March 4, 1877 . Since he refused to run again in 1878, Stewart could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1879 .

After serving in the US House of Representatives, Jacob Stewart became head of land surveying in Minnesota. He held this post between 1879 and 1882. He then worked again as a doctor. He died on August 25, 1884 in Saint Paul and was buried there.
