James Marvin "Jim" Ramstad (born May 6, 1946 in Jamestown , North Dakota ) is an American politician . Between 1991 and 2009 he represented the state of Minnesota in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jim Ramstad attended the University of Minnesota until 1968 . He then studied law at George Washington University until 1973 . From 1968 to 1975 he was also a member of the US Army Reserve . In 1969 and 1970 he served on the staff of the Chairman of the Minnesota House of Representatives . In 1970 he became an employee of Congressman Thomas S. Kleppe from North Dakota. From 1974 to 1978 he was a lecturer at the American University in Washington . In 1978, Ramstad led the campaign for Congressman Bill Frenzel .

Politically, Ramstad joined the Republican Party . From 1981 to 1990 he was a member of the Minnesota Senate . In the congressional elections of 1990 he was a candidate of his party in the third constituency chosen by Minnesota in the US House of Representatives in Washington. There he took over from Bill Frenzel on January 3, 1991. After eight re-elections, he was able to complete nine consecutive terms in Congress by January 3, 2009 . In the 2008 elections , he decided not to run again.

In Congress, Ramstad was a member of the Committee on Ways and Means and two sub-committees. He was also vice chairman of four other congressional bodies. Among the Republican congressmen from Minnesota he was considered the most liberal, who voted conservatively in 68% of the votes, but supported the liberal side of the house in 21% of the votes. Jim Ramstad is married and lives in Minnetonka . Today he is a board member of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University .
