August H. Andresen

August Herman Andresen (born October 11, 1890 in Newark , Kendall County , Illinois , †  January 14, 1958 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1925 and 1933 and again from 1935 to 1958 he represented the state of Minnesota in the US House of Representatives .

Career

August Andresen moved to Grand Forks , North Dakota with his parents in 1900 . In 1902 the family moved to Eagle Grove , Iowa . In 1905 they settled in Red Wing, Minnesota. August Andresen attended the public schools in these cities. In 1912 he graduated from St. Olaf College in Northfield . Between 1912 and 1915, Andresen served as a special counsel with the Minnesota Department of Weights and Measures . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1914, he began to work in Red Wing in his new profession. Between 1918 and 1919 he was a member of the Minnesota National Guard . In addition to his legal work, Andresen was also active in business and the financial sector. He was also involved in agriculture.

Politically, Andresen was a member of the Republican Party . In the 1924 congressional elections, he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the third constituency of Minnesota , where he succeeded Charles Russell Davis on March 4, 1925 . After three re-elections, he was able to represent his district in Congress for four terms until March 3, 1933 . Shortly before the end of his term of office, the 20th Amendment was passed, bringing forward the beginning of the legislative periods of the Congress and the terms of office of the President from March to January. Andresen was not re-elected in the 1932 elections.

In 1934, Andresen was elected to the US House of Representatives again in the first district of Minnesota. There he replaced Henry M. Arens on January 3, 1935 . After eleven confirmations, he could remain in Congress until his death in January 1958. From 1947 to 1949 he was chairman of the Select Committee on Commodity Exchanges . In the years up to 1941, many of the New Deal laws were passed in the House of Representatives . Between 1941 and 1945, the events of the Second World War also shaped the work of the House of Representatives. In 1951, the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution was passed, regulating the terms of office of the President. August Andresen was a possible candidate for the post of agriculture minister in the cabinet of President Dwight D. Eisenhower . But he made it clear that he wanted to keep his mandate. He died on January 14, 1958 at Bethesda Naval Hospital .
