history

In the early 1850s, settlers came up the Mississippi River on steamers that docked at Red Wing. The goal of these settlers was the high-yielding fields in Goodhue County . They mostly grew wheat . Before the railroads opened up the country, Goodhue County produced more wheat than any other county in the United States. In 1873, Red Wing topped the ranking with the highest wheat turnover. The warehouses at Red Wing Harbor had a capacity of over a million bushels of wheat. After the railroad connected southern Minnesota to Minneapolis and Saint Anthony, where the largest flour mills were built, the Red Wing harbor lost its importance. In the second half of the 20th century, the United States Army Corps of Engineers built locks and dams along the river to increase the river's water depth. This increased shipping traffic with bulk goods such as grain and coal on the river again, but the port itself could not regain its former position.

The early settlers built smaller mills and craft shops similar to those in New England , where many of them came from. Immigrants from Germany , Ireland, and Sweden brought early industries to Red Wing, specializing in tanning , shoe production , the making of farm implements, bricks, barrels, boats, furniture, ceramics, and buttons. Small breweries and sawmills emerged. Stonemasons and innkeepers offered their services. The Saint James Hotel was also built during this period .

Hamline University was founded in Red in 1854 . It was the first higher education institution in Minnesota, which was closed in 1869 due to low student numbers as a result of the Civil War and was later reopened in Saint Paul .

The Red Wing was also home to Gustavus Adolphus College , a private school of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA). The college was founded by Eric Norelius in 1862 and relocated to East Union in 1863 before moving to St Peter's in 1876.

The brick and ceramic industry, Red Wings, developed at the northwest end of town, near Hay Creek . The raw material came from near Goodhue on the upper reaches of the Hay Creek. A branch line was built to transport the clay to Red Wing. The factory buildings are still visible today, in contrast to the railway line that was abandoned in 1937.
