Hager City is on the east bank of the Upper Mississippi across from the city of Red Wing in the neighboring state of Minnesota . The Lake Pepin is located about 8 km below Hager City.

In the Mississippi floodplain south of Hager City are the Pierce County Islands State Public Hunting Grounds , a natural area where hunting and fishing are permitted under certain conditions.
