Lake Pepin is a natural reservoir on the upper Mississippi River on the border between the American states of Minnesota and Wisconsin . The lake has an area of around 100 km² and an average depth of 5.5 m.
Written records of the lake have existed since 1727, when the French Fort Beauharnois was built on its banks. In 1730 the fort was rebuilt on higher ground.
On July 13, 1890 the ferry Sea Wing had an accident on the lake, killing 98 people.
In 1922, Ralph Samuelson invented water skiing on the lake in Lake City, Minnesota .
The writer Laura Ingalls Wilder comes from Pepin , Wisconsin, on the east bank of the lake , whose books were the basis for the television series Our Little Farm .
