The Wirtschaftsschule am Oswaldsgarten (WSO) in Gießen is a commercial and vocational school with eight types of school and a focus on business and administration.

history

Founded by the business teacher Friedrich Feld , the school emerged in 1922 from the private technical school of the Gießen Commercial Association as a commercial advanced training school. In 1940 it became the business school as a forerunner of today's vocational high school . In 1956 the current main building on the north facility was moved into as a new building. The school was expanded to include House C (Alte Aliceschule) and House B (former Albert Schweitzer School) as well as an auditorium . Around 1500 students attend the WSO. Since 2004, unaccompanied minor refugees have been offered intensive German lessons and the opportunity to acquire German school-leaving qualifications. Federal President Joachim Gauck was a guest at the school in 2015 to pay special tribute to the pioneering role and work in this area. Numerous awards at state and federal level preceded this visit. It was renamed the Wirtschaftsschule am Oswaldsgarten in 2016 after an independent report by the city archivist confirmed investigations within the school community on Friedrich Feld's National Socialist past.

education

At the business school am Oswaldsgarten, both the Abitur or secondary school leaving certificate can be acquired together with basic commercial training and a commercial profession can be learned part-time or full-time. In the InteA area , young people with a migration background are offered intensive German lessons and the opportunity to acquire a secondary school diploma and subsequent school diplomas.

Practical and professional orientation as well as the promotion of general education and the education for independence, teamwork and a health-conscious life are the focus of educational objectives. The implementation of these goals is to be ensured through internship days accompanying the school year, weekly internships, internships abroad, company visits, application training with external cooperation partners and career orientation days with alumni. Practical work also takes place in the learning secretariat and learning office, the school's own practice company . Operational processes in different departments have been simulated here since 1982.

Foreign language certification, a US exchange, project weeks and participation in competitions are also part of the school's regular offer.

Participation in the Health Promoting School initiative of the Hessian Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs helps to create awareness of healthy living and working in the school community.
