Severooneschsk ( Russian Североонежск ) is an urban-type settlement in northwestern Russia . It belongs to the Arkhangelsk Oblast and has 5289 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

Severooneschsk is located on the left bank of the Onega River , about 220 km south of the Oblast capital Arkhangelsk . It is located in Plesetsk Raion , about 24 km from the Plesetsk center.

history

In the 1960s, large deposits of bauxite were discovered in what is now Severooneschsk , and the first mine was completed in 1968. To develop the deposits, the construction of a railway bridge over the Onega began, which was completed in 1971. At the newly established Iksa railway station, Severooneschsk was established in 1973 as a working settlement. Originally the settlement was supposed to be called Severorossiysk and the settlement of the bauxite processing industry was expected to result in rapid growth of the place to up to 100,000 inhabitants. However, these plans did not come true, partly due to the low production volumes.

In 1985 Severooneshsk received the status of an urban settlement.
