Jerzewo is the administrative center of the rural municipality Jerzewskoje (Russian Ерцевское сельское поселение ).
history
Jerzewo was built in 1937 as a station on the Moscow –Archangelsk railway line . At that time there was a camp of the Gulag "KargopolLag" ( Каргопольлаг ), which was named after its administrative center Kargopol , on the site of today's Jerzewo . In November 1940 the administration of the KargopolLag was transferred to the Jerzewo station, but the name of the camp remained. Up to 30,100 people in the Gulag, who were temporarily imprisoned, were mainly used for wood extraction and processing as well as for the construction of railway lines. In 1938 the Jerzewoer Railway ( Ерцевская железная дорога ) was opened, which was built by the prisoners of the Gulag and mainly used for the transport of wood. The railway line, which grew from year to year, ran with numerous branches in a westerly direction and connected various camp points. In the 1950s, the KargopolLag camp system was converted into a labor recovery camp. Under the name Utschreschdenije Potschtowy jaschtschik 233 ( Учреждение Почтовый ящик 233 / Institution Postbox 233 , short: П-233 ) these existed until 1994. During this time, more camp points were established and the railway line expanded. The extension of the longest arm of the railway line was 140 kilometers and ran in a south-westerly direction to the Vologda Oblast. In the years 1994 to 1995, almost all storage points had to be closed due to budget cuts. The P-223 became part of the administration of the Onega Forest Improvement Institutions ( Онежского управления лесных исправительных учреждений; УЛИУ ). In Jerzewo the Association of Reform Colonies No. 4 ( объединение исправительных колоний №4; ОИК-4 ) was formed, to which the reformatory institutions in Jerzewo and Sowsa with more than 1700 prisoners belonged. Due to the closure of most of the camp points, many settlements in the Jerzewo area were closed over time. As a result, the Jerzewo Railway was almost completely stopped by 2007.
