Mesen ( Russian Мезень , scientific transliteration Mezen ) is a small town in northwestern Russia . It has 3575 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) and belongs to the Arkhangelsk Oblast .

geography

The city is located about 215 km northeast of the Oblast capital Arkhangelsk on the right bank of the Mesen River , 45 km above its mouth in the White Sea . Mesen Airport is located around 4 km north of Mesen.

The city of Mesen is the administrative center of the Mesenski rajon .

history

Settlements in the area of ​​today's Mesen emerged as early as the 15th and 16th centuries.

In 1780 the settlements Okladnikowa ( Окладникова ) and Kuznetsova ( Кузнецова ) were united to the city of Mesen. Mesen received city rights and became the center of the district of the same name ( Mesenski ujesd ). This occupied half of the then Arkhangelsk governorate . In 1929 the city became the center of the newly founded Mesenski rajon.
