The 966 km long Mesen ( Russian Мезень , fem .; German also the Mesen) is a river in the north of the European part of Russia .
course
The Mesen rises in the swamps on the western flank of the Timan ridge , about 370 m above sea level. Initially, it flows in the territory of the Komi Republic in a narrow valley with steep and rocky banks in southwestern directions, then turns in northwestern direction and reaches Arkhangelsk Oblast . In the middle reaches the river meanders in wide arcs and has a large number of rapids , which make navigation difficult. The lower reaches from the confluence with the Waschka are also rich in shoals. The influence of the tides extends up to 64 kilometers above the mouth in the Mesenbos of the White Sea .
The main tributaries of the Mesen are from the right Mesenskaja Pischma ( Мезенская Пижма ), Sula ( Сула ) and Pjosa ( Пёза ), from the left the Vashka ( Вашка ).
Hydrography
The Mesen catchment area covers 78,000 km². In the vicinity of the mouth, the mean water flow is 886 m³ / s (minimum in March, maximum in May with 9530 m³ / s). In the lower reaches of the city of Mesen about 30 kilometers above the mouth, the river is 1,300 meters wide and up to 3 meters deep, the flow speed is 0.5 m / s. At the mouth it is almost 4 kilometers wide, but only 1.2 meters deep.
The Mesen freezes in early October to mid-November and thaws again in April. It is always navigable up to the confluence of the Waschka (200 km above the mouth), when the water level is high up to the Makar-Ib jetty (680 km).
Infrastructure
On the middle course, the Mesen west of Koslan is reached by a branch line branching off from the Pechora railway at Mikun . The only road bridge crosses the river here ( ⊙ ).
