Railway line to Novaya Zemlya (planned)

The Pechora Railway ( Russian Печорская железная дорога or Печорская железнодорожная магистраль ) is a double-track main line in the north of the European part of Russia . The line is operated by the Northern Railway of the Russian Railways (RŽD) . The management is based in Sosnogorsk .

The Pechora Railway is more than 1,500 kilometers long and runs from Konoscha in a northeastern direction to the resource-rich region around Vorkuta in the polar Urals . The Konoscha – Vorkuta railway is the most important traffic axis in the Komi Republic and is primarily used for the transport of coal , oil and wood .

route

The line branches off from the Yaroslavl  - Vologda  - Arkhangelsk railway line in Konosha, a good 700 kilometers north of Moscow . From Kotlas , which had a railway connection from Kirov as early as 1899 , the Pechora Railway is a main line with several branches. The route kilometers count from Moscow. For the first 100 km to Welsk , the line actually consists of two single-track lines with separate kilometers (southern branch from Konoscha), some of which run right next to each other with shared stations, some more than 15 km apart.

At the Tschum station, about 50 kilometers from Vorkuta, the westernmost section of the Arctic Circle Railway to the Ob , which was built in 1947, branches off . Larger places along the railway besides Vorkuta are Welsk, Kotlas, Wytschegodski , Mikun , Jemwa , Uchta , Sosnogorsk, Pechora and Inta .

history

Former administration building of the independent Pechora railway in Kotlas

In the years 1937–1942 the Pechora Railway was built, which could be used as an important supply route during the Leningrad blockade in World War II . From 1937, the Wendinga - Syktywkar railway crossing in Mikun was built, which is part of the Pechora Railway system. During the construction of the route, which was extended to Vorkuta at the end of the 1940s , tens of thousands of Gulag prisoners were used as forced laborers, including from the Vorkuta labor camp .

From 1942 the line with its branches was called the North Pechora Railway (Severo-Pechorskaya schelesnaja doroga) , from 1947 only the Pechora Railway was an independent railway administration. On November 1, 1967, it was incorporated into the Northern Railway .

From 1981 two more branch lines (to Ussinsk and Troizko-Pechorsk ) were built. It is planned to close the gap in the Arkhangelsk - Syktyvkar connection by closing the gap between Karpogory and Wendinga.
