The Northern Dvina ( Russian Северная Двина , Severnaya Dvina ) is a 744 km long river in the north of the European part of Russia .

The Russian name Severnaya Dvina literally means "Northern Dvina" to distinguish it from the Western Dvina .

River course

The river is created in the North Russian lowlands near Veliki Ustjug by the confluence of the Jug and Sukhona , the latter being the larger and longer river. From this “river wedding”, the Northern Dvina, which is rich in fish, flows mainly in a north-westerly direction through a swampy, wooded and cleared depression , some of which is more than 100 km wide and is lined with chains of hills. Thus it is developing into the largest navigable river in the European northwestern Russia, which in the lower reaches is quite island-rich and in places up to 7 km wide and 15 m deep. Just a little northwest of Arkhangelsk and directly east of Severodvinsk , the Northern Dvina flows into a 900 square kilometer delta in the Dvinabusen , a bay of the White Sea up to 70 km wide .

Catchment area and navigability

The catchment area of the Northern Dvina covers 357,052 km².

The river is navigable along its entire course , but frozen over from December to April. It is connected to other waters by canals : one canal leads to the Volga , which flows into the Caspian Sea and is connected to the Black Sea via another waterway . Such vessels via a different channel from the Northern Dvina on the Onega and Ladoga to the Gulf of Finland . This connects the White Sea with the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean Sea . The Northern Dvina is therefore an important inland waterway route in Northern Russia, especially for timber transport to Arkhangelsk.

The most important tributaries from the right are Wytschegda , Uftjuga and Pinega , from the left the Waga . The cities of Veliky Ustyug, Krassavino , Kotlas , Krasnoborsk , Novodvinsk , Arkhangelsk and Severodvinsk lie in the direction of flow on the Northern Dvina .
