Verkhnyaya Toima ( Russian Ве́рхняя То́йма ) is a village (selo) in northwestern Russia . The place belongs to the Arkhangelsk Oblast and has 3462 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). It is the administrative center of the Rajons verkhnyaya toyma .

Verkhnyaya Toima is located about 340 kilometers southeast of the Oblast capital Arkhangelsk . The place is located on the right bank of the Northern Dvina , at the mouth of the eponymous Verkhnyaya Toima river into the same. The closest cities are Bereznik , about 135 kilometers north, and Kotlas , about 140 kilometers south of Verkhnyaya Toima.

history

Verkhnyaya Toima is one of the oldest surviving places in Arkhangelsk Oblast. It was mentioned for the first time in 1137 in a Novgorod charter, which contained tribute payments to the Novgorod diocese. In 1478 the place fell into the possession of the Grand Duchy of Moscow and in 1552 it became part of the Verkhhnetsky Volost ( Верхнетоемская волость ). In April 1924, Verkhnyaya Toima became the center of the newly founded Verkhnomsky Raion within the Northern Dvina Governorate ( Северо-Двинской губернии ). In 1937 it finally became part of Arkhangelsk Oblast.

Economy and Infrastructure

As in the rest of Arkhangelsk Oblast, the forest and timber industry is one of the main economic branches in Verkhnyaya Toima. The food industry is also very important. There are dairy, meat processing, livestock and agriculture businesses in the Rajon.

There is a road connection from Verkhnyaya Toima with Kotlas and Arkhangelsk via a ferry connection to the left of the Dvina. From here there is a regular bus service to the surrounding towns. Verkhnyaya Toima has no connection to the railway network. The nearest railway station is in Kotlas. Other places along the Dvina can also be reached by ferry during the ice-free period from spring to autumn. There is a small airport to the northeast of the town, which is currently not in operation for passenger traffic.
