history
The exact founding date of Schipitsynos is not known. It is certain that the settlement already existed in the 17th century. Schipitsyno was probably originally a settlement founded by the old Orthodox who came from the Moscow area. The name of the settlement is derived from the Russian word for dog rose ( шиповник / Schipownik ), which overgrown the banks of the Dvina when the settlement was founded. The settlers called the plant Schipiza ( шипица ). The first settlement name Schipitschicha ( Шипичиха ) was derived from this name , which became the current name Schipitsyno in the 1870s . Initially, the economy of Schipitsyno was based primarily on agriculture and handicrafts, especially the manufacture of felt boots. Its favorable location on the Dvina and the nearby forests soon made Schipitsyno an ideal area for forestry. A sawmill was founded in the city in 1907, which quickly became one of the largest companies in the city.
In 1950 it was given urban-type settlement status.
