Schenkursk ( Russian Ше́нкурск ) is a small town in northwestern Russia . It belongs to the Arkhangelsk Oblast and has 5702 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). Schenkursk is the administrative center of the Schenkurski rajon of the same name .

The city is located about 373 km southeast of the Oblast capital Arkhangelsk on the right bank of the Waga , a left tributary of the Northern Dvina .

history
Schenkursk was first mentioned in 1315 in a document about the purchase of the Schenkursky Pogost ( Шенкурский погост ). At the same time the inhabitants of the area built on the mountain Schenga-Kurja ( Шеньга-Курья a) Ostrog . In 1552 it became the center of the Waschski ujesd ( Важский уезд ) and from 1565 it was one of the places under the name Waga that provided for the maintenance of the oprichnina . In 1629 the place was first mentioned under its current name Schenkursk in a document from Tsar Mikhail Fyodorowitsch Romanov . From 1710 Schenkursk belonged to the Archangelogorod Governorate and at the same time became the capital of the Vashka Oblast ( Важский область ). In 1780 it received its current town charter and became the center of the Schenkurski ujesd within the Arkhangelsk governorate . After the dissolution of the governorate, Schenkursk became the center of the newly established Schenkursk Rajon in 1929 and part of the Arkhangelsk Oblast in 1937.

The main industries in the city are the wood and food industries. The city and the entire Rajon have no connection to the railway network. The Russian M8 highway runs west of the city .
