The Schenkurski rajon ( Russian Ше́нкурский муниципа́льный райо́н / Schenkurski munizipalny rajon ) is an administrative unit within the Arkhangelsk Oblast , Russia . It is located south of the Oblast capital Arkhangelsk . The administrative center is the city of Schenkursk .
geography
The Schenkurski rajon is located in the southern part of Arkhangelsk Oblast. In the west of the Rajons border the Rajons Njandomski and Plesezki , north of the Winogradowski rajon , east of the Verkhnoyemsky rajon , southeast of the Ustjanski rajon and south of the Welski rajon . The area of the Rajon is 11,300 km². Coming from the south, the 575 km long Waga flows through the entire Rajon before it joins the Northern Dvina at Beresnik on the left .
history
The area of today's Schenkurski rajon was originally settled by Finno-Ugric settlers. The Schenkurski Pogost was first mentioned in 1315 . In 1552 the area became part of the Waschki ujesd ( Важский уезд ). In 1710 the Ujesd became the Washka Oblast ( Важский область ) within the Archangelogorod governorate. The Waschka Oblast was divided into the Schenkurski ujesd and the Welski ujesd in 1780 . In 1897 the Schenkurski ujesd already had 76,759 inhabitants, with an area of 21,779.1 square meters (equivalent to 23,234 km²).
In 1929 the Schenkurski rajon was founded as part of the Northern Krai . Initially, it had an area of 7,700 km², but it grew over time in the course of numerous administrative reforms. From 1936, the Rajon became part of the Northern Oblast . On September 23, 1937, the Rajon went into the territory of the newly founded Arkhangelsk Oblast.

Administrative division
The Rajon is divided into twelve municipalities ( муниципальное образование ), one of which is an urban municipality ( городское поселение ) and eleven rural municipalities ( сельское поселение ). With Schenkursk as the administrative center, there is only one place with city status within the Rajon . 15,196 inhabitants live in the Schenkurski rajon (as of October 14, 2010), which corresponds to 1.3% of the population of Arkhangelsk Oblast.

Economy and Transport
In addition to the forest and food industries, agriculture, especially livestock, is one of the most important industries in the Rajon.
The entire Rajon is not in possession of a railway connection. The next railway station is in Welsk, 147 km to the south . The road network within the Rajon has been continuously modernized and expanded in recent years. The Russian M8 trunk road from Moscow to Arkhangelsk runs through the Rajon .
