Werst

The wersts ( Russian верста , wersta, Finnish Virsta ) is a unit of measure for the length . It was valid in the Russian Empire (1721–1917).

According to an older definition , 37,500 wererst corresponded to the circumference of the earth's equator . According to this determination and according to the current knowledge of the circumference of the earth's equator, a rounded value of 1,068.7 meters .

According to the latest definition, a werst is equivalent to 42,000 British inches or 1,066.8 meters.

Ratios of the old Russian units of measurement for length

  • 1 milja = 7 werst = 7.4676 kilometers
  • 1 verst = 500 Saschen = 1.0668 km
  • 1 Saschen = 3 arshin = 2.1336 meters
  • 1 arshin = 16 werechok = 71.12 centimeters
  • 1 Werschok = 1.75 British inches = 44.45 millimeters

The numbers in the above list are accurate if one follows the assumption that one imperial inch is 25.4 millimeters.
